Custom Designed Sofa For Penelope Design Built The Traditional Way

Custom Designed Sofa

Custom Designed Sofa

This gorgeous, custom designed, modular sofa (pictured above) was made for a client of  Penny Goodman of Penelope Design. The sofa was made to a specific size to fit the room as well as complementing the sleek ottoman. After measuring the room Wills Furniture designers created this design at 2800 x 1800mm with square arms and a return daybed. It not only fits the room but made it through the front door at the Glen Iris residence! Luxuriant comfort is ensured with fully hand tied coil sprung seat with feather wrapped foam seat cushions and feather/fibre back cushions. Upholstered in a lush velvet Aspen, in the colour Sterling from Zepel Fabrics.

Feather Wrap Cushioning

Feather Wrap Cushioning

Pictured, the feather wrap cushion technique used in this sofa, has a multi-layer of high density foam and a soft, slow release foam called “memory foam. This is encased in a channelled doona cover of duck feathers and holofil fibre. This combination creates a luxurious comfort level, whilst allowing the cushion to maintain its structure to eliminate “fluffing up”. The amount of foam and feathers can be varied to accommodate individual requirements.

Sprung Seat Technique

Sprung Seat Technique

Wills Furniture’s factory manager Matt Howe (pictured) showing how to tie off a sprung seat the traditional way. Working on one of Wills Furniture popular designs, the Madrid chair, Matt demonstrates the traditional method used, with jute webbing and 8 inch steel coil springs all hand tied off with button twine. Not many furniture manufacturers still use this method with so much cheap “throw away” furniture on the market today. Our clients expect quality furniture that lasts, so we build the traditional way to deliver the best furniture.

Ottoman diamond buttoned.

Ottoman diamond buttoned.

Ottomans add grace and elegance to a space with a practical element. Pictured is a traditional diamond buttoned ottoman made by Wills Furniture. You can order custom made ottomans in any size or shape in fabric or leather, as chosen by you. Ottomans have an interesting history, having been brought to Europe from the Ottoman Empire in the late 18th century. In the Ottoman Empire an ottoman was the central piece of furniture for seating and was piled with cushions but when it came to Europe it became fitted furniture that wrapped around three walls of a room. It later evolved into a smaller version to fit into the corner of a room. Ottomans took on the circular or octagonal shape we see today through the 19th century.

You are welcome to bring your clients to view our collection on display at our showroom in Hawthorn, where you can discuss any modifications or customised designs to suit your project.
