Interior Design Trends 2018

It’s the year of the return to natural earthy colours. The experts agree. Watch those soft pastel pinks make way for more natural earthy tones – peach, brown, turquoise and orange. Or as was demonstrated in Milan at Milan Del Salon 2018 – Terracotta, watermelon red and sienna with russet highlights. The Pantone Colour Institute has named ‘Ultra Violet’ as the ‘colour of 2018’. A soft ‘dramatically provocative shade’ is how the Institute describes the colour. According to their press Release the soft shaded hue ‘will take our awareness and potential to a higher level’.

Fashion colours are often best incorporated in accessories such as vases, cushions, bowls and smaller chairs where fabric can be changed easily. Dusty blues, burnt oranges and quieter greens can all reflect the Australian bush, the outback and its richer tones. Select homewares and decor in these colours to lift your living areas – dining rooms, living rooms and kitchens.

Velvets in jewelled tones were very popular at the Milan Show and with Emerald, Ruby and soft blues such as sapphire we can expect to see some simply beautiful new upholstered furnitures, often used dramatically in entranceways. Or alternately neutral coloured Sofas, armchairs and occasional chairs lifting the visage through clever use of such rich tones on Ottomans, Decor, Wallpaper or accessories. Throws, plush fabrics and linens offer layering of textures providing an understated style and elegance yet giving a feeling of warmth and cosiness. It’s relaxed, it’s comfortable.

There will be a gravitation towards darker, more evocative woods with timber beams re-appearing on ceilings. As well there may well be patterns and wallpapers defining ceilings and the four walls and floor spaces below.

Designers will rely on colour and less style when scoping a room or the entire interior. Personal style and choice may well move design rather than trend. As well there will be a move – to some a retro move – to the indoor plants favoured in the 1970s, giving a ‘living look’.
